ME AND MY COMMODORE
by Randy Harris
In 1976 in high school, I was
introduced to the world of computers
using a teletype terminal. Playing
text based games on that hooked me on
computers.
In Nov. of 1982, right after the
C-64 came out, I was introduced to the
C-64 by a maintenance engineer. He and
his friends had compared several of
the computer brands and models and
concluded that the C-64 was the best
buy. After tape loading several games
(eg. Monopole), I was hooked! I began
saving my money and finally had my own
a year later. Being a fan of the video
game Donkey Kong, that was my first
software purchase when I bought the
C-64. Since the C-64 version of DK was
better than any other emulation of the
original, the C-64 was the obvious
choice for me.
While I bought it for the games, I
was immediately learning to program in
BASIC.
Adding a printer, EasyScript and
Superbase turned it into a real-world
workhorse for my church. When I became
treasurer in 1984, Vizastar made my
new SX-64 a lean mean Lotus 1-2-3-like
machine.
In 1992 I joined SWRAP which
enhanced my C= computing 10 times with
the aid of fellow Commodore friends.
My system was eventually replaced
with a 128D running GEOS with a
PostScript printer in 1992. Wheels and
all the CMD goodies made it a 'Super'
computer all the way up to today.
